cloud cloud

After combining our 3 parts together, we got our final guide book in French for creating a Google Account, accessing Google Drive and developing a Google Form. Since I’m not a English speaker, neither a French speaker, my partners had gave me the most easy part to translate. In their parts, Google Drive and Google Form, there were more texts, furthermore, these texts were more specialized than that in my part. So after finishing my part, I tried to understand and take important notes of their parts.

This semester, I have a new course named « traduction informatique », we have translated several about computer science and learned plenty of specialized words in this domain. In their parts, I saw same familiar expressions such as « storage » « cloud » and « web browser » which we had learned from the technical translation.

Here, the interesting term « cloud » came out again! Nearly in all the texts that we had translated in that course, I could see this word for thousand times! That’s not possible!! lol But really, a high frequency! For its translation, we keep directly the English word « cloud », even in the noun phrase. For example: we keep all the noun phrase in English like  »cloud computing » or there are some expression like « cloud storage », we translate only « storage » but still keep « cloud » (stockage en cloud).

OK, actually, we need to digest the information from all the courses, the acknowledge and the methods are not only used for one domain.

What is the importance of the title?

« A good title makes all the difference in the world. It can be the difference between having your post widely read and shared across the internet and only getting a small amount of traction. The main purpose of a title is to garner attention and entice people to start reading your post. This is why the words that you use and how your craft your title is vital to the success of your post. » said Nolan Wilson, technical writer in content development and social media and article.

BUT! Translating the title may be more difficult than just creating a title. At first, we should keep the meaning of the original text, and then, we should also respect and serve the reading and writing habits in target langue.  That’s way we should adjust the structure and the collocations.

As showing in the following pictures, we changed all the present participle of the verbs « create » « access » and « develop » into the infinitive form « créer“ ”accéder“ and ”réaliser ».

Besides, we found that the symbol & in the title of English version. This little stuff named ampersand, representing the conjunction word « and ». It originated as a ligature of the letters et, Latin for « and ». In French, we don’t use that symbol. So we change it into the equivalent word « et »

In addition, we added a “comment” at the beginning of the whole title to make it more comprehensive in the sense. Here we pointed out « how », how to create, how to access and how to develop the Google stuffs.

Our final title turned out!!

terms and conditions

terms and conditions

At the end of my part, we found a big difference between the English version and the French version. As the following pictures show, we could easily capture the difference.

In English version, the seventh step about the terms and conditions is just a short sentence with two hyperlinks of « Terms of Service » and « Privacy Policy » at the bottom of the registration page. However, in the French version, we found that there was no more following steps after the seventh step. But when we click Next stop to continue, there appeared a new page with the same content but more precise as shown in the picture above. Therefore, we changed the order of the seventh step and the eighth step.

Besides, I found another little thing interesting!

The English version I said here was the original text which our U.C.F partners gave us. In fact, when I tried my self to create a new account using the English version of Google, I found that it was the same situation as the French version. « what?!!!! » O_O

What on earth is the reason for this phenomenon?

Actually, it was the option of « location » that made such a difference. This option is normally automatic. If we keep the location as « France », even if we change the language, we just change the display language in English. If we change the location as « United States » or « United Kingdom », the little sentence will appear!

Magic Time Now ! lol

full stop

As regards the full stop in the English version, we found that this punctuation was used at the end of all the sentences both in the instructions and the notes. At first, I didn’t pay attention to that, and I had never think about that a little punctuation might cause problems later on. But it really happened!! However, Ana told me that in French, we don’t use a full stop at the end of a note after checking my translation. So we removed all the full stop in the notes.

In addition, as for the translation of « note », I had found an equivalent with lots of concurrences in the English-French dictionary « linguee » which is « petit mot ». She also told me this translation is inappropriate here. When we want to leave a message for someone, we should write a few sentences on a note. It was these sentences that we called them « petit mot ». Usually, this expression is used in common usage. So here, apparently, we should change an expression more formal. During the searching, I found that « remarque » was used in lots of articles and the instructions in French.

Text box

My boyfriend had a interview today… OK, that is none of business of my project….aha :)Let’s get down to the business !

Today, we are going to talk about these yellow text boxes.

Actually, in the original text in English, these text boxes with yellow border, in fact, are composed of two parts, one is the text, the other is the yellow text-box.

At first, I only replace the text in French, but later, when we checked my translation in the Linux system, they turned into a mess, just like the picture below.

Therefore, I came up with two solutions:

1. replacing as well the text and then, combine the text-box and the text together, move the text box with yellow border to the bottom layer.

2. making a new text-box, input the translation in French, then, change the color of border to yellow, and that, change the width of the border to 3 pound.

Both of them could have the same perfect result.

Today, let’s talk about our interesting term « tiles-icon ». Do you know what is it and how to say it in French?

4                        2

That’s it!!The little symbol in the yellow box. → →↑

I asked my native classmates about the translation, but most of them had no ideas about that, they didn’t give me too much useful information. One of them suggested that we could translate it into « icône mosaïque », but she was not sure about that neither. we found some other similar occurrences, as « icône tuiles », « carrelage icône de vue » and « Icône hamburger ». However, the first one and the second seems like a very literal translation and as for the last one, although it’s a valid denomination, but for a different icon, as showing in the following picture.

So we face directly this problem and turn all of our attention to find the right answer.

Finally, we found the profession name for this word with a careful observation, as the following steps:

Firstly, when we meet the problems, of course, we should find the « AID ».

Secondly, we use this icon when we would like to switch the different Google products. So we chose ”managing and using Google product“ in the menu, and then  » ways to use the Google bar ».

Et voilà!!

Finally, we found that the translation should be « lanceur d’application » in French and « App launcher » in English.

table of content

table of content

Actually, « table of content » is the first part which I tried to translate.

So, I translated these sub-titles in French like this.

***As for « GMAIL », « GOOGLE DRIVE » and « GOOGLE FORMS », after comparing the  pages in English and the pages in French, I founded that only the last one has a french name(Google formulaires )!  I also asked some of my classmates who are native speakers about how they called   »GMAIL » and « GOOGLE DRIVE », it’s interesting that our French people just pronounce these two words in a french way but keep their spelling in English.

***I made a mistake of the meaning of setting up, I considered it as settings, and then,  how to translate this term became another point that need a deep consideration. I turned to one of my friend, he gave me the same word that I had got in the dictionary English-French »la configuration ». However, I changed both the setting language of my Iphone and of my friend’s Android phone into French , and I discovered that setting up in Iphone was « réglages » and in Android phone was « paramètres ». Therefore, I asked my partner how she translated this term, she gave me the answer of « accéder à », util that moment, I realized  that I had confused the concepts of setting up and setting………………….What a shame!!!

In the beginning, I didn’t give more thought to translate this little part in a French style, so I kept the same forms and make a literal translation.

More over, normally, each of these sub-titles has a hyperlink, but when I replaced  them in French, here comes the problems! As shown in the second picture, when I replaced the translation of « setting up Google forms » , I lost the directory of ellipsis, and the number came close to the sub-title. I tried many times, but got the same results.

So I propose this question to dear Ana, and then she replied me a simple solution, where I just took unnecessary pains to study an insignificant problem, that the table of content could be created automatically………………..How could I forgot this advantage of word-office!! Laissez-mois tranquille…………

changing the images

Today, I tried to change all the pictures of pages in English into pages in French. However, this simple work that I thought was very easy didn’t seems that simple for me.

I bought my computer in China, so my operating system is in Chinese, even the Internet Explorer—Chrome,  I tried many times to change the language in French in the option menu, At first, everything is gonna fine, I have found the link  »changing the main page into French », but when it turned into the next page for create a new account of Goodle, the language became Chinese again. So I can’t make a PrintScreen to get a picture in French by using my computer. Until now, I still can’t figure it out why this happened.

Whatever, I’ll  finish this work tomorrow just after the test, of course, with the computer in our university. Even though I am really  not used to using the keyboard in French! I type all my « A » in « Q » ninety-nine times out of a hundred.
